Illustrator Tutorials

Pen Tool Tutorial
We started our session by following a pen tool tutorial so that we can learn the important digital skill of tracing image and type.

This is the type that we started to trace. I found this exercise relatively basic although i learnt some helpful skills like using the shift key to keep the line straight whilst choosing a new point in the line.

Here is my finished traced type. I feel like i can now confidently trace type with accuracy and preciseness. I have learnt that using the shift and alt key whilst tracing helps keep the line straighter and overall the shape neater.

Logos
Our next exercise was to draw logos just from memory. We learnt that a logo has to be something that sticks in your head if it is to be successful or memorable. As we were using black pen and white paper we had to ignore the colour aspect of the logos which is as important as the shape and form of the imagery and type even though some of these are visually recognizable without.

We then used some of these logos to try and trace on illustrator. This has improved my skills in using the pen tool because of the different shapes and lines i have tried to draw. Below are my traced images of the Apple and BMW logos in the light green line. This has also taught me about the simplicity of logos and how they can be broken down into basic shapes and lines. Simplicity is a key concept to consider when designing a logo.

We looked into free logo design generators online to compare to these logos. Most of them are over complicated in imagery but not in a effective way. Most of the imagery looked like clipart
